The Kings hold a 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals, and they will have their first shot to close out the series Wednesday night against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Kings were on the other end of a 3-0 series deficit this postseason, but they stormed all the way back to beat the San Jose Sharks in seven games in the first round.
Doughty knows the importance of closing out the series quickly, but he insists the Kings are in a better place than the Sharks were, and that starts with the top, an apparent jab at San Jose captain Joe Thornton.
“Once we won that first game of the San Jose series, we kind of had a feeling we were going to come back and win that series,” Doughty told reporters Wednesday, according to The Canadian Press. “And you could see it in their eyes and their team and their captains and leaders that they were worried about us coming back. So we don’t want to give these guys any life.”
Well, well, well.
That certainly seems to be a rip on not only Thornton (San Jose captain), but you could argue it’s a slight toward alternate captain Patrick Marleau, too.
Doughty and Thornton do have a bit of a history. They dropped the gloves in a 2012 fight, which was the first of Dougthy’s career.
