The Red Sox called up Cecchini and optioned reliever Alex Wilson to Triple-A Pawtucket. Cecchini, who has spent the entire 2014 season with Pawtucket, is considered one of the top prospects in the Red Sox organization.
Cecchini, a fourth-round pick in 2010, has turned heads since joining the system. The 23-year-old was named an All-Star in each of his first three minor league seasons — Carolina League in 2013, South Atlantic League in 2012 and New York-Penn League in 2011 — and owns a .408 on-base percentage in his professional career. Cecchini led all minor leaguers last season with a .443 on-base percentage over 129 games split between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland.
Cecchini leads Pawtucket this season with 49 hits. He’s hitting .278 with a .354 on-base percentage, one homer and 21 RBIs. Cecchini was bypassed for a call-up twice this season when Will Middlebrooks went down with two separate injuries, as the Red Sox felt he needed some more defensive seasoning. But Cecchini finally is getting a taste of major league action with Boston looking for an extra bat.
Wilson has made two appearances with the Red Sox this season, giving up one earned run on three hits over three innings. The 27-year-old right-hander owns a 1.42 ERA in 18 appearances spanning 19 innings with Pawtucket.
