Ottawa Senators Announce GM Bryan Murray Has Cancer
The Senators announced that general manager Bryan Murray has been recently diagnosed with cancer. The Senators didn’t offer any information as to what type of cancer Murray is dealing with, and it’s unclear how much time Murray may have to miss.
The team did announce, however, that assistant general managers Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee will run the hockey operations during any of Murray’s “periodic absence.”
The 71-year-old Murray has been an influential hockey name since the 1980s. He spent parts of 17 seasons as an NHL coach with stops in Washington, Detroit, Florida, Anaheim and Ottawa.
Murray won 620 games during his career behind the bench, which included a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and a Jack Adams Award win in 1984. He was then promoted to Ottawa’s general manager in 2007 and signed a three-year contract extension in April of 2011.
