Report: Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks Agree To Three-Year Contract

As expected, Dirk Nowitzki reportedly took a pay cut — a very significant one at that — to stay with the Dallas Mavericks.

The 7-foot power forward has played his entire 16-year NBA career with the Mavs, and he recently expressed that he didn’t intend to go anywhere else and would be willing to slash his salary to make room for free agents such as Carmelo Anthony.

ESPN’s Marc Stein reported that Nowitzki’s new deal is for three years and believed to be in the $30 million range, a stark contrast to the four-year, $80 million contract he just finished. Sources told Stein that the contract gives Nowitzki the option of becoming a free agent again in 2016 and retains his “rare” no-trade clause.

The deal can’t be made official until July 10 when the NBA’s salary-cap and luxury-tax figures for next season are announced. Still, Nowitzki (sort of) announced the signing on Twitter.
