Reports: Andres Torres Opts Out Of Contract With Red Sox Organization

The Boston Red Sox signed veteran outfielder Andres Torres last month to add some organizational depth. The 36-year-old never sniffed the majors and now will pursue other opportunities.

Torres, who played 18 games with Triple-A Pawtucket, exercised an out clause in his contract over the weekend, according to SB Nation’s Joon Lee and MLB Trade Rumors’ Tim Dierkes. Torres is seeking an opportunity with a National League team, a source told Lee.

Torres has played for four major league teams — Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and New York Mets — over parts of nine seasons. The Red Sox signed Torres amid a woeful stretch for the club’s offense — particularly the outfield — but never turned to the former fourth-round pick during his ascent through the system.

Torres, who worked his way back from heel surgery, hit .292 (21-for-72) with three home runs and eight RBIs this season with Pawtucket. His best big league season came in 2010, when he hit .268 with 16 homers, 63 RBIs and a .823 OPS over 139 games with the Giants.
