All merchandise items have been pulled off the shelves and have been taken down from online listings at the university because Anheuser-Busch trademarked the slogan earlier this year to use in their advertising campaigns.
BYU associate athletic director Duff Tittle said after the university found out that the beer company had the slogan trademarked, they decided to ditch the slogan.
The Cougars will likely use “Rise Up” as their slogan going forward, but before they decide on anything it’s probably best they do some research and make sure that’s not trademarked either.
This isn’t the first time BYU has had a snafu with a slogan. Last season, head coach Bronco Mendenhall decided to alter the nameplates on the back of his players’ jerseys so they read “honor”, “spirit” and “tradition,” but changed his mind after players and fans voiced their concerns.
