The Red Sox designated Carp for assignment Friday, removing another member of the 2013 World Series championship team from the 2014 roster. Boston now must trade Carp, release him or place him on waivers within the next 10 days.
Carp batted .268 with nine home runs and 52 runs batted in over the last two seasons with the Red Sox. He was batting .198 this season in 103 plate appearances.
The Red Sox also placed Shane Victorino on the disabled list and promoted Mookie Betts from Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has been since he was sent back to the minors July 19 to make room for Victorino coming off the DL. Betts isn’t just coming up to see the scenery, either; he will start in center field and bat ninth against the New York Yankees.
Victorino’s ongoing injury struggles, coupled with the possible late arrival of deadline pickup Yoenis Cespedes, created a need for the Red Sox to add Betts. The 21-year-old has batted .235 in 10 games with the Red Sox this season.
