The Texas Rangers acquired Carp off waivers Sunday after the Red Sox designated him for assignment on Friday. He moves from one last-place club to another, as the Rangers currently occupy the cellar in the American League West.
“For his desire to get more additional at-bats, I can’t say the role he’s going to get there, but we wish him well,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
Carp was a valuable member of the 2013 World Series championship team, batting .296 in 216 at-bats. As a key left-handed hitter off the bench, Carp batted .263 with a .417 on-base percentage as a pinch hitter last season.
His production and playing time dropped off this season, however, and he was batting .198 in 86 at-bats at the time he was DFA’d.
