The 31-year-old relief pitcher was designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics on July 24 and then released by the team on Friday. Johnson struggled mightily with the A’s, losing his closer job early in the season, in addition to posting a 7.14 ERA in 38 appearances with the ballclub prior to his release.
But before joining Oakland, Johnson put up solid numbers with the Baltimore Orioles, where he spent the first six years of his career. As the O’s closer, Johnson recorded 51 saves in 2012 and 50 the next season, leading the majors in saves both season. Johnson worked out for Baltimore following his release, and a reunion seemed likely, but he’ll instead be taking his talents to the Tigers organization.
The A’s still owe Johnson the remainder of his $10 million contract, meaning the Tigers can call him up whenever they please and only have to pay him the prorated league minimum.
