Celtics Owner Wyc Grousbeck: ‘It’s My Goal’ To Keep Rajon Rondo In Boston

Rajon Rondo has caused his fair share of controversy in Boston, but that doesn’t mean the Celtics are ready to ship him out of town.

The All-Star point guard’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2014-15 season, and rumors continue to fly about what his future holds. According to the Celtics’ front office, however, one desirable outcome trumps all others.

“We expect Rajon to be in Boston for the long term,” president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said Tuesday morning.

“Absolutely it’s my goal to keep Rondo here,” Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck added. “I think we all want that. And I actually honestly think — he should speak for himself — I think Rajon wants to stay or would be very happy to stay.”

Grousbeck and Ainge clearly see Rondo as part of Boston’s future, but that doesn’t mean they have all glowing things to say about their star point guard. During an interview with WBZ-TV Sunday, for example, Grousbeck had some rather strong words when asked about Rondo’s attitude.

“He’s super stubborn,” Grousbeck said, via Boston.com. “I don’t know how coachable he really is.”

Rondo’s disputes with former Celtics head coach Doc Rivers are well-documented, and Grousbeck added that the current Los Angeles Clippers coach would likely echo his sentiments.

“I know if you ask Doc, ‘Was (Rondo) the most coachable guy, or in the top half, 50 percent,’ he’d say, ‘No, he’s in the bottom 50 percent of being coachable.’ It’s hard with him,” Grousbeck said.

Where Rondo ends up is anyone’s guess, but it has become clear that Celtics executives are not shy about pointing out his flaws, even while voicing their desire to keep him around.
