Michael Sam Impressing Dallas Cowboys With ‘Quickness And Instincts’

Michael Sam is working hard, and the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff is noticing.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are pleased with Sam’s progress in his limited repetitions with the team’s practice squad.

“I like his quickness and his instincts,” defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli told the News. “He’s got really good work habits, so just keep working to develop him.”

The biggest problem for Sam is the number of reps he’s getting. Practice squad players don’t get much action, and they really have to prove their worth when they do. Sam seems to be doing that, however, and with numerous injuries and defensive limitations on the Cowboys defensive line, perhaps Sam’s first regular-season appearance might come sooner rather than later.

The Cowboys could use some defensive help quickly. The team had the worst defense in the NFL last season — allowing 415 yards per game — and they started the year on the wrong foot as Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers had their way with the Dallas defense in Week 1.

The team is also missing Anthony Spencer and Demarcus Lawrence due to injury. If the team continues to struggle defensively or suffers a few more injuries, don’t be surprised if Sam’s call-up comes soon.
