Michael Sam Waived From Cowboys’ Practice Squad, Vows Not To Give Up

The Dallas Cowboys have waived Michael Sam from their practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, joined the Cowboys in September and spent the first seven weeks of the season on their 10-man practice squad. Sam never made an appearance on Dallas’ 53-man roster.

After his release, Sam tweeted his appreciation to the team and his supporters.

The St. Louis Rams selected Sam in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft. He made it through training camp with the Rams and had 11 tackles and three sacks in four preseason games before being released.

The Cowboys made the move to open a roster spot for linebacker Troy Davis, a second-year pro who worked out for the team Monday.
