Brady Quinn: Mississippi State Isn’t No. 1 Team Until Florida State Loses

The College Football Playoff selection committee released its first top 25 of the 2014 season. Not everyone agrees with the rankings.

Mississippi State is ranked No. 1 in the nation, just ahead of Florida State. Former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn understands the science behind the ranking, but he finds the logic flawed.

Mississippi State, like Florida State, is 7-0. The Bulldogs also play in the SEC West, which is considered the toughest division in all of college football. But, as Quinn wrote on FootballByFootball.com, the Seminoles are the defending NCAA champions. They should be considered the top dogs until a team knocks them off.

“No different than a championship boxing match, in order to take the belt, one must knock out the champ,” Quinn wrote. “No one has been able to do this so far this year, and besides their upcoming match versus Louisville, I don’t see many bumps along the way to the playoff.”

The committee’s first crack at formulating a top 25 with an eye toward an eventual four-game playoff was very telling. It should be an interesting college football season filled with debate, debate and, oh yeah, debate.
