Trevor Gillies is known in the hockey world for two things. One, he’s not very good. Two, he’s a pugilist who many consider a dirty player.
Gillies was back at it Friday night in the American Hockey League, where he’s currently a member of the Calgary Flame’s AHL affiliate. In a game that eventually turned pretty ugly, Gillies probably crossed the line yet again.
The 35-year-old journeyman goon fought Rochester Americans forward William Carrier on Friday night. Not only was the fight instigated by Gillies, as the bout was ending and being broken up by the referee, Gillies appeared to take Carrier’s head and attempt to bash it into the ice.

As you can see, things spiraled out of control after that. The fracas came in the final moments of the game, with the Americans’ eventual 6-1 win in hand. Gillies was given 27 minutes of penalty time — including two game misconduct penalties — for his role in the skirmish. When it was all said and done, 187 penalty minutes were handed out in the game, with 148 of those PIMs coming in the final 3:09.
Gillies was suspended nine games in 2011 for his role in a line brawl with the Pittsburgh Penguins while playing with the New York Islanders. He sparked an ugly scene after skating directly at Eric Tangradi, elbowing the then-Penguins forward in the head and starting a fight with Tangradi despite an obvious injury.
