AHL Goaltender Dislodges Net To Avoid Facing 2-On-0 Breakaway (Video)

Bridgeport Sound Tigers goaltender David Leggio came up with an ingenious way to stop a 2-on-0 chance from the Springfield Falcons on Sunday night.

The rush was the result of a neutral-zone turnover, and Leggio knew he didn’t have a chance of stopping the play, so he got creative. Leggio knew that if the net was out of position, it would force a stoppage of play, so he turned around and dislodged it.

The Falcons were awarded a penalty shot, per American Hockey League rule 63.5, which, as the Hockey News points out, states: “If the net is deliberately displaced by a goalkeeper or player during the course of a ‘breakaway,’ a penalty shot will be awarded to the non-offending team.”

Leggio apparently reasoned he had a much better chance at stopping one man on a breakaway than two. It worked in his favor because he made the save on Dana Tyrell’s penalty- shot attempt.

The Falcons had the last laugh, though, with a 4-3 victory that ended the Sound Tigers’ four-game point streak.
