Julian Edelman Earns AFC Special Teams Player Of The Week Honors

New England Patriots fans likely aren’t surprised with Week 9’s AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman earned the honor after returning a second-quarter punt 84 yards for a touchdown in Sunday’s 43-21 thrashing of the Denver Broncos. Edelman’s fourth career punt-return touchdown set the Patriots’ franchise record for most all time.

This wasn’t Edelman’s first time receiving AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. He earned the award in Week 11 of the 2011 season against the Kansas City Chiefs, when he had a punt-return touchdown of 72 yards.

Patriots players have received the AFC Player of the Week award on three other occasions in 2014. Defensive end Chandler Jones was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 14, and defensive lineman Chris Jones was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after the Patriots’ victory over the New York Jets on Oct. 16.

And, of course, quarterback and Edelman’s best bud Tom Brady was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October.
