Brady Poppinga remembers a moment from 2007 when Tony Romo lived up to his careless reputation.
The former NFL linebacker was in Big D to take on Romo and the Dallas Cowboys as a member of the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys were rolling, until Romo lost focus.
“With the game seemingly in Cowboy control, Romo went under center and with his cadence popped off a joke, laughing to himself right before the snap of the ball,” Poppinga writes on FootballbyFootball.com. “The joke ended up being on him. Trying to get a laugh from our defense, he proceeded to mishandle the handoff and fumble the ball, which he recovered.”
Despite instances like that, Poppinga insists that most of the criticism Romo has received during his career is unwarranted. Now that the Cowboys have vanquished the Detroit Lions and are moving on in the NFC playoffs, Poppinga sees Romo as clutch, not careless.
