Andrew Luck is widely considered the future of the NFL. The Indianapolis Colts could soon show their faith in the 25-year-old quarterback by giving him a monstrous contract.
The Colts have been working on the parameters of a blockbuster deal with Luck, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter in advance of Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between Indianapolis and the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
According to Schefter, many around the league expect the Colts to make Luck the highest-paid player in the NFL at a figure around $25 million per year.
Luck currently is one year away from completing his rookie deal. Conversations between Luck and the Colts reportedly have been ongoing, though nothing can be finalized until the start of the new league year (March 10).
Luck, who was the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, is coming off a strong third season in which he threw for a career-high 4,601 yards and 38 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. The three-time Pro Bowler also rushed for three touchdowns in 2014, giving him 12 career rushing TDs.
Luck’s legacy — like that of any quarterback — ultimately will be determined by his Super Bowl success. The Colts clearly have confidence in the Stanford product’s ability to take the next step in the years to come.
