Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau Files For ‘Johnny Hockey’ Trademarks, Agent Says

Johnny Gaudreau is earning Calder Trophy consideration for his exceptional on-ice performances for the Calgary Flames this season.

The former Boston College star is hoping to secure off-ice success, too, and he took another step toward that by filing for “Johnny Hockey” trademarks in the United States and Canada, TSN reported Tuesday.

“We were concerned that people were going to abuse the Johnny Hockey name, coming out with Johnny Hockey shirts and stuff, and we wanted to make sure that did not occur,” Gaudreau’s agent, Lewis Gross, said, via TSN. “We felt that Johnny was going to be a special player, and if he takes off the way we felt he could, he has the potential to have endorsement opportunities that could be very valuable.”

This isn’t much of a surprise, especially after Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel trademarked “Johnny Football” last year.

Gaudreau ranks second in scoring among rookies with 32 points (13 goals, 19 assists) in 42 games. The 21-year-old forward will participate in the NHL Skills Competition on Saturday, Jan. 24, as part of All-Star Weekend at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
