One of professional wrestlers biggest superstars is heading to the Hall of Fame.
World Wrestling Entertainment revealed Monday that “Macho Man” Randy Savage is expected to be the first member of the 2015 WWE Hall of Fame class. The formal announcement is expected to come on “Monday Night Raw,” one of the WWE’s weekly TV shows.
Pro wrestling legend and Savage’s longtime friend Hulk Hogan is expected to induct Savage.
Savage, whose real name was Randy Mario Poffo, will be inducted nearly four years after an untimely death in a car accident. The former world champion likely would have been inducted sooner, but some feel Savage’s reportedly contentious relationship with WWE owner Vince McMahon delayed his induction. Savage eventually left then-WWF for World Championship Wrestling in 1994.
A former outfielder in the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox systems, Savage ascended to incredible heights during one of the WWE’s most successful eras in the 1980s and into the 1990s.
He’s perhaps best known for his most famous match, a showdown with Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat at “WrestleMania III,” a match many consider the greatest of all time.
