Chris Stewart wasn’t the only player to be shipped away at the NHL trade deadline, but he was the only one to find out on live television.
The former Buffalo Sabres winger learned Monday on TSN’s “TradeCentre” that he’d be playing for the Minnesota Wild, and his reaction was priceless. Anchor James Duthie asked Stewart if he’d heard the news yet before letting the forward know he’d be moving to the other side of the Great Lakes in exchange for a 2017 second-round draft pick.
“Minnesota Wild?” Stewart said. “Sounds good.”

Despite the live surprise, Stewart actually wasn’t that surprised at all. The Sabres are dead last in the NHL at 19-39-5, so it was obvious they’d be making moves. And Stewart, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, has been the center of trade talks for a while.
Plus, there are much greener pastures in Minnesota, where the Wild are holding on to the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
“It’s kind of hard to ponder what team it was going to be, but obviously knowing my contract situation, I knew the potential I could be moved, and I’m excited I’m going to get a chance to play in the playoffs,” Stewart said.
