David Ortiz Ejected From Red Sox-Orioles Game For Arguing Balls, Strikes

BOSTON — David Ortiz was shown the door early Sunday.

Ortiz was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park by home plate umpire John Tumpane after arguing balls and strikes. Daniel Nava replaced Ortiz following the ejection, which occurred with no outs in the fifth inning and the Boston Red Sox trailing 5-3.

Ortiz voiced some displeasure with home plate umpire Paul Emmel during a previous plate appearance before working a walk. Tumpane, who had been umpiring second base, replaced Emmel behind the plate in the fourth inning — Emmel suffered an injury — and wasted no time in ejecting Ortiz. The slugger argued a check-swing strike call that appeared to be low and out of the zone.

Ortiz slammed his bat in frustration after receiving the hook. He also got in Tumpane’s face and tossed his elbow guard before retreating to the dugout.

Red Sox manager John Farrell emerged from the dugout for a few words with Tumpane, but the skipper wasn’t ejected, as cooler heads prevailed in that discussion.
