Brawl, Chaos Mars Rangers-Motherwell Scottish Playoff Game (Videos)

The chaotic and ugly scenes that immediately followed the Scottish Professional Football League’s playoff final between Motherwell and Rangers overshadowed the shocking ones that took place during the game.

Rangers defender Bilel Mohsni punched Motherwell’s Lee Erwin on Sunday at the end of his team’s 3-0 loss, which confirmed another season in the Scottish Championship (second division). Mohsni’s punch sparked a post-game brawl, which resulted in him, Erwin and Motherwell’s Fraser Kerr receiving red cards from the referee, according to the Mail.

Home fans then stormed the field. Some were celebrating Motherwell’s Premier League survival while others chose to taunt visiting Rangers fans.

Mohsni reportedly tried to confront Erwin outside of Motherwell’s Fir Park after the game, but staff prevented him from straying too far from the Rangers team bus.

The players’ brawl and crowd trouble occurred after another shocking scene already had taken place. A Motherwell fan standing near the sideline hit Rangers’ Lee McCulloch in the face with an umbrella.

Motherwell took a 3-0 lead into Sunday’s second leg, and the Steelmen effectively clinched the series on a comical opening goal. Marvin Johnson’s deflected shot fell to Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell, whose attempt at punching the ball went horribly wrong.

A Motherwell fan threw a flare onto the field after Bell’s gaffe. It merely was a symptom of things to come.

The Scottish Football Association certainly will punish both teams heavily, and police are investigating the incidents as well.
