BOSTON — Ryan Hanigan wasted no time in going under the knife.

Hanigan, who fractured his right hand in Friday’s loss to the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, underwent successful surgery Saturday, according to the Boston Red Sox.

There’s still no timetable for Hanigan’s return, but Red Sox manager John Farrell said after Saturday’s game the veteran catcher almost certainly will be out until after the All-Star break. Farrell said before Saturday’s game, however, that Hanigan is expected to return at some point this season.

Dr. Matthew Leibman at Newton-Wellesley Hospital performed Hanigan’s procedure. The 34-year-old backstop needed the surgery to repair a metacarpal fracture in his right hand.

The Red Sox called up 23-year-old catcher Blake Swihart after placing Hanigan on the 15-day disabled list. Swihart went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in his major league debut.
