Danny Ings used his down time a few years ago to set up his career for the future.
Ings said Tuesday the attributes he honed while recovering from injury in 2012 will help him thrive at Liverpool and boost the Reds’ attack, according to the club’s website.
“After my knee injury (in 2012) I sort of devoted my whole time to working on my speed, my movement and my creativity,” Ings told LFCTV, according to LiverpoolFC.com.
Ings joined Liverpool from Burnley this summer as a free agent. The 23-year-old striker expects to use his qualities to unbalance opposing defenses and offer his teammates a forward outlet at which they can direct their creative energies.
“What I’ve found was really effective, even at Championship level, was making runs constantly in behind,” Ings said. “As soon as a defender switches off that run in behind is so effective.
“As long as there’s someone stretching the pitch and you’ve got your creative players behind you in that space — and you’ve got players at this football club to feed those runs — you can be an effective team.
“It’s certainly something I’m looking forward to.”
Ings is challenging himself at a higher level, having switched from Burnley to Liverpool. He previously vowed to work hard in order to succeed at Anfield, and his latest comments suggest his old and new tricks can help increase Liverpool’s goal production, especially against strong opponents who push their defensive lines high up the field. A striker’s chief function is to score goals, and Ings still will require service in order to do so.
