Jose Aldo’s Reps Get Independent Doctor To Prove Ribs Are Fractured (Photos)

Jose Aldo is out to prove he had good reason to pull out of UFC 189.

The reigning featherweight champion withdrew from his title fight against Conor McGregor on Tuesday after suffering fractured ribs while training. UFC released a statement prior to that, however, claiming “several doctors … determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and cartilage injury during training.”

But according to Bleacher Report, Aldo’s representatives reached out to San Diego surgeon Dr. David Chao, who used to work for the Chargers, on Tuesday asking for an unbiased opinion on Aldo’s MRI results. Chao, not knowing who the scans belonged to, looked at them Wednesday (after Aldo’s reps said they needed his opinion as soon as possible) and said there was no doubt there was fracture. Chao even laughed when Aldo’s reps asked if the injury could heal quickly.

It was then the reps told Chao who the MRI results belonged to, and they allowed him to share photos on Twitter.

Bleacher Report reached out to two other independent doctors, and both agreed with Chao. UFC did not respond to BR’s request for comment.
