David Price Traded To Blue Jays Days After Troy Tulowitzki Deal

The Toronto Blue Jays are going all in.

A wild Major League Baseball trade season continued Thursday, as the Blue Jays acquired left-handed pitcher David Price from the Detroit Tigers. The Blue Jays will send prospects to the Tigers, and top left-handed pitching prospect Daniel Norris highlights the return. Detroit also gets fellow left-handed pitchers Jairo Labourt and Matt Boyd to round out the deal.

It’s a high price for a rental — Price will be a free agent this winter — but the Blue Jays apparently feel they’re close enough to make a push. Toronto currently sits seven games back in the American League East with a 51-51 record, but it’s just two games out of a wild card spot. The Jays made a big splash earlier this week when they acquired shortstop Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado Rockies.

Price is in the midst of another fine season. The five-time All-Star is 9-4 with a 2.53 ERA over 21 starts, including three complete games. He’s recorded 138 strikeouts in 146 innings and has held opposing hitters to a .241 batting average.

In Norris, the Tigers get Baseball America’s 18th-ranked prospect entering the 2015 season. The 22-year-old didn’t have great numbers at Triple-A this season (3-10, 4.27 ERA), but he’s been solid in limited big league action. He’s made five starts in the majors this season, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings.
