Australian Jarryd Hayne is a rugby player by trade, but he’s now a running back for the San Francisco 49ers.
After surviving final cuts and making the 53-man roster, Hayne is making his debut Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.
Things didn’t start so hot for the Aussie, as he muffed his first career touch — a punt.

He looked a bit better on his next opportunity, a catch out of the flat in which he duped a defender and gained about seven yards.

But the best part of Hayne’s debut? An Australian newspaper is live-blogging it, and it might be the best thing you read all day. The blog’s author, Matt Cleary (who describes himself as a “Journo, man of golf, gibberer, malarkist” on his Twitter page), doesn’t seem to fully understand the rules of football, but he’s having a blast anyway.
Cleary also has referred to the punter as a “punt man,” said Adrian Peterson has a “nice shiny head on him,” and described 49ers coach Jim Tomsula as having looked like he ate an onion sandwich.
Also, Hayne’s nickname apparently is “HAYNE PLANE.” So now you know.
Needless to say, you should be reading this as it’s happening.
