Massachusetts’ Rob Font Beats Joey Gomez By TKO At UFC Fight Night Boston

BOSTON — Rob Font put on a show in front of his hometown fans in Sunday’s UFC Fight Night Boston at TD Garden.

The North Reading, Mass., native earned a dominant TKO victory over New Hampshire-born Joey Gomez at 4:13 of the second round in their early preliminary card fight. Font won the first round, too, highlighted by this takedown.

In the second round, a hard left-handed punch stunned Gomez, and Font, sensing his opponent was in trouble, went in for the finish. Font unleashed a few powerful combos, even throwing in some knee strikes. The referee was forced to stop the fight once Gomez was on the ground against the cage and taking several shots to the head area.

“He’s a really difficult guy to fight because he mixes takedowns in so well with everything else — you just never know what’s coming next,” Gomez said of Font. “He’s really strong, but he didn’t feel any stronger than me. It was like he landed one big punch, and the fight was over. It was a fight, though. I’ve never been hit that much in a fight before.”

It was an impressive performance that improves Font’s overall record to 12-1. He’s now 2-0-0 in his UFC career.

“I’m living in the moment right now,” Font said. “Once I got comfortable out there and started using my footwork, I was having a lot of fun. I want to sit back and relax for a bit, but any bantamweight interests me, but I want to chill first.”

Gomez, who was making his UFC debut as a last-month injury replacement for Patrick Williams, is 6-0 in non-UFC fights.
