Carson Smith Will Begin Red Sox Season On DL With Right Flexor Strain

The results of Boston Red Sox reliever Carson Smith’s MRI weren’t great, but they definitely weren’t the worst.

Smith was diagnosed with a strained right flexor muscle Tuesday, per reports, after exiting Monday’s spring training game against the St. Louis Cardinals with forearm cramping. He faced only one batter.

The 26-year-old right-hander will begin the season on the disabled list, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell, but there’s no timetable for his return.

Forearm cramping can be a sign of needing Tommy John surgery, so Tuesday’s diagnosis is somewhat of a relief for the Red Sox. Even though there’s not yet a plan in place for when Smith will resume throwing, Farrell expects him to pitch this season.

Smith, who was acquired from the Seattle Mariners over the offseason, had four clean innings in five spring training games for the Red Sox, giving up two hits and striking out four.
