Geno Auriemma Responds To Boston Columnist’s Comments On UConn Women’s Basketball

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days — if so, welcome back — you’ve probably heard about the back-and-forth between Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma and The Boston Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy.

It all started Saturday afternoon when Shaughnessy tweeted his thoughts on the Huskies’ dominance.

Shaughnessy’s take on women’s college basketball was met with immediate criticism from Auriemma, who you can hear in the video below.

There’s no denying that UConn has been the most dominant team in women’s college basketball since Auriemma took over the program. The No. 1 seed Huskies, who have 10 national championships, are vying for a ninth straight trip to the Final Four on Monday night when they face the No. 2 seed Texas Longhorns.

But whether or not their monumental success is a good thing for the sport is a different story, according to Shaughnessy.

“It doesn’t make (UConn) bad … As I said, you don’t want to punish them for their greatness. But it’s not good for viewers and for ESPN,” Shaughnessy said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich on Monday, via ForTheWin.com. “And I know they’re all defending it, but they can’t be liking this either. When your tournament, your featured thing, has 60-point victories by one team, that’s won 119 out of 120 by an average margin of 19 … You don’t win by 60 in a tournament, folks.

“What I like about sports is competition: You tune in wondering who’s going to win. And when that’s extracted, it’s not for me, that’s all.”

Well, then the Huskies have a potential solution for Shaughnessy and those with similar feelings.
