Larry Bird Reminds Us All Of Red Auerbach’s Celtics Coaching Wizardry

Red Auerbach coached the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships and won seven more as an executive, showing the power of his acute basketball mind.

Larry Bird recently provided a glimpse into Red’s Hall of Fame teaching ability when he posted to Facebook an old video of him, the coach and Celtics greats Kevin McHale, Robert Parish and Danny Ainge illustrating proper pick-and-roll technique.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that every player involved in this video remained tied to the game of basketball. Bird coached the Indiana Pacers to a 147-67 record in three seasons and now is their president of basketball operations. McHale coached the Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets before being fired by the latter earlier this season. Ainge runs the Celtics as president of basketball operations, and Parish is a team consultant.

All wore unbelievably high socks and short shorts in the 1980s.
