Joao Carvalho lost his life doing something he loved to do.
The Brazilian MMA fighter died Monday night in Dublin from injuries he sustained two days prior in a fight against Charlie Ward. Total Extreme Fighting organized the Carvalho-Ward welterweight fight, which lasted into the third round before the referee stopped it. (Click here for video of the final minute.)
Carvalho complained of illness around 20 minutes after the fight and received prompt medical attention. He then was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery but died less than 48 hours after the procedure, according to The Guardian.
Carvalho’s team announced his death Tuesday on Facebook.
Ward is a teammate of UFC superstar Conor McGregor, who attended the fateful event at Ireland’s National Boxing Stadium.
Carvalho was 28 years old.
