Bruins’ Stanley Cup Title 44 Years Ago Immortalized By ‘Bqstqn’ Engraving Error
The Boston Bruins clinched their fifth Stanley Cup title in franchise history on May 11, 1972, against the New York Rangers.
Bobby Orr led the way, racking up eight points in the series, including the series-clinching goal in Game 6. Orr also won his second Conn Smythe trophy as the Bruins took home their second Stanley Cup title in three seasons, having won in 1970.
After the series, “Boston” was misspelled when it was engraved on the Cup. Two “Q’s” were engraved in the place of the two “O’s” in “Boston” to instead spell “Bqstqn.” The spelling error eventually was corrected on the replica Cup created in 1993.
