BOSTON — The Detroit Tigers will be very happy when David Ortiz retires.
The Red Sox slugger has hit plenty of clutch homers over his career, but his game-tying grand slam against Detroit in Game 2 of the 2013 American League Championship Series is near the top of the list.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Big Papi was at it again Tuesday night. With his team trailing by four runs and two runners on base in the third inning, Ortiz cranked a 3-2 Mike Pelfrey offering deep into the Boston night for a three-run home run that put the Red Sox back in the game.

Ortiz’s 25th homer of the season landed on the far left end of the visitor’s bullpen at Fenway Park, just feet away from where “bullpen cop” Steve Horgan famously celebrated in 2013 after Torii Hunter’s diving attempt proved fruitless.

A Big Papi homer these days also doesn’t come without a milestone — the three-run blast was the 528th of his career, and he’s now just six homers behind former Red Sox Jimmie Foxx for 18th on Major League Baseball’s all-time list.
David Ortiz has now hit 25+ HR in 12 different seasons (all with Boston), trailing only Ted Williams (14) for the most in Red Sox history.
