MLB Trade Rumors: Red Sox Not Done, Still Trying To ‘Do Something Big’

Is Dave Dombrowski gearing up to make a splash at the first trade deadline of his Boston Red Sox tenure?

The Red Sox president of baseball operations has been one of baseball’s busiest men in the last month, already acquiring pitchers Brad Ziegler and Drew Pomeranz in addition to bolstering the club’s depth by trading for infielder Aaron Hill and utility man Michael Martinez.

However, the Red Sox’s biggest move still might be to come. ESPN’s Jayson Stark reported Monday there’s a sense around baseball that Boston is trying to do “something big” before the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline.

What that means at this point, of course, is anyone’s guess. Stark obviously hypothesizes a couple of names in naming Oakland A’s starting pitcher Sonny Gray and Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale, but as he also mentions, it could be someone else.

Stark’s report echoes what ESPN’s Jim Bowden reported late last week when he said the Red Sox weren’t done yet. TodaysKnuckleball.com’s Jon Heyman specifically mentioned the Red Sox on Friday when he reported the White Sox are going to listen to offers for Sale and fellow left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana.

If nothing else, it sounds like it’ll be a pretty interesting week leading up to the deadline.
