U.S. Open Results: New No. 1 Angelique Kerber Beats Karolina Pliskova In Final

No matter how good of a week you’ve had, Angelique Kerber’s probably was better.

The German became the new No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world after she reached the U.S. Open final and Serena Williams was upset by Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals, but that honor might have felt a little hallow if she didn’t follow it up with her second Grand Slam title of the year.

Luckily for her, though, that’s a feeling she never has to worry about, thanks to her gutsy three-set victory over Pliskova in the final, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Kerber looked like the No. 1 player in the world in the first set, but Pliskova fought her way back into the match and forced a third set, which she led early by a break. But Kerber got the match back on serve, and she broke at love in the decisive game to win the U.S. Open.
