Broncos’ Wade Phillips Taken To Hospital After Scary Sideline Collision

The Denver Broncos got a bad injury scare Sunday, but it didn’t involve any of their players.

As Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby ran back an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter at Sports Authority Field, San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon ran directly into Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips on the sideline.

Phillips hit the ground hard, and play was stopped for several minutes as he was attended to by medical personnel. The 69-year-old had to be carted off the field and immediately was taken to a local hospital.

Fortunately, Phillips appeared to be in stable condition after the scary injury, and head coach Gary Kubiak told CBS sideline reporter Jamie Erdahl that his defensive coordinator would be “fine.” Linebackers coach Reggie Herring took over play calling duties for Phillips when the game resumed.
