It’s been a tough couple of days for Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson after recently learning his wife, Nicholle, has been diagnosed with cancer.
He returned to the ice Sunday night for the first time since her diagnosis and played remarkably well in a 37-save shutout victory that ended the Edmonton Oilers’ five-game winning streak.
An emotional scene unfolded after the final buzzer, as all of Anderson’s teammates embraced him for the win and to show their support for his family.
Anderson also earned the No. 1 star of the game. Visiting players normally don’t skate out onto the ice when they receive one of the top three stars of the game, but this was a unique moment.
Oilers fans stood and cheered for Anderson as he skated out as the No. 1 star, and Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot also stayed out to show his support.
Awesome moment. Craig Anderson comes out for first star of the game. Cam Talbot isn't leaving until he's paid his respects. pic.twitter.com/sSBQcsjZXe
