Remember Rex Ryan’s Patriots ‘Sources’ He Talked About? Yeah, He Made That Up

Perpetual pot-stirrer Rex Ryan got the last laugh Sunday in Foxboro, and he’s not quite ready to turn the page.

Ryan brought his Buffalo Bills to Gillette Stadium and silenced a banged-up Patriots squad, leading the Bills to 16-0 win over the Jacoby Brissett-led Patriots.

After the game, Ryan — who many thought might have been coaching for his job — told reporters he had “sources” inside Gillette Stadium who tipped him off to Brissett — not injured quarterback Jimmy Garroppolo — getting the start.

“My sources inside the New England Patriot building said that Jacoby Brissett would be the quarterback,” Ryan supposedly revealed. “How about that? I’ll stir some stuff up. Who was it? Who was it? I don’t know who it was.”

As it turns out, and as you might have expected, Ryan wasn’t being completely honest. In fact, he made up the whole thing.

“Absolutely (I had sources), as far as you guys know,” Ryan told reporters Monday, according to ESPN.com. “That’s just great. Because, man, I stirred the pot. Because you know they’re sitting back and going, ‘Who is it? Who is it?’ I was B.S.-ing the whole time.

“If people were worried about it, that’s awesome. That’s good. Let them think they got (someone inside).”

Ryan was a barrel of laughs over the last week or so, starting with his Bill Belichick impression to kick off a news conference, followed by Ryan jumping on Patriots receiver Julian Edelman’s conference call pretending to be a member of the Buffalo media.

The Patriots — and the returning Tom Brady — won’t have to wait too long for their chance to exact some revenge. New England travels to Orchard Park, N.Y., on Oct. 30 to take on the Bills at New Era Field.
