Patriots Work Out Three Free Agents, Including Jarvis Jenkins

FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots, with open spots on their 53-man roster and practice squad, brought three free agents in for workouts Friday.

The Patriots worked out tight end Kennard Backman and defensive tackles Jarvis Jenkins and Davon Coleman, a source told NESN.com.

The Green Bay Packers selected Backman in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Alabama-Birmingham. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end played in seven games last season. The Packers placed him on injured reserve Aug. 30 and released him Sept. 6.

The Washington Redskins selected Jenkins in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Clemson. He signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets this offseason, but they released him Nov. 9. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive lineman recorded nine tackles in nine games with one start in 2016. He had four sacks with the Chicago Bears in 2015.

Coleman entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in 2014. He has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants. He has three career tackles.

Running back Tyler Gaffney, whom the Patriots released Thursday, cleared waivers Friday, according to a source.
