An apology might be coming from Charles Barkley.
The Pro Basketball Hall of Famer and opinionated TNT NBA analyst talked about the Golden State Warriors during Thursday night’s coverage and described their style of play with a poor choice of words.
“Maybe I’m old school, but I’m never going to like that little girly basketball where you have to outscore people,” Barkley said on the pregame show before the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Los Angeles Clippers matchup.
“I love (UConn women’s head coach) Geno Auriemma, one of my favorite people. I love women’s college basketball. But I don’t want it in the NBA.”
Hmm, does Chuck realize that to win you have to outscore the other team?
There’s nothing wrong with women’s basketball. And, quite frankly, the Warriors’ style of play has worked pretty well for them. After all, they won a league-record 73 games last season and won a championship the season before that.
It’s likely that some of this hate Barkley has for the Warriors stems from them winning a title and him having zero rings from his illustrious career. This also isn’t the first time Barkley has gone after the Warriors, and he even criticized Kevin Durant for leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder and signing with the Warriors as a free agent in July.
Being critical of the Warriors is fine. Barkley is paid to analyze the NBA, its players and teams, but making a comparison to their style of play and women’s basketball is dumb, doesn’t make sense and is just unneeded.
