Dak Prescott The Next Tom Brady? Trainer Sees Similarities Between QBs

Comparing players is dangerous. Comparing a rookie to a future Hall of Famer is borderline reckless.

But respected trainer Tom Shaw wasn’t trying to stir the pot when he compared Dallas Cowboys first-year quarterback Dak Prescott to New England Patriots legend Tom Brady. He simply was trying to drive home the point that Prescott reminds him of Brady for several reasons based on his experience training both signal callers.

“I had Tom Brady coming out of college as a rookie and then the first seven years of his career. And I had the opportunity to work with Dak before the draft,” Shaw recently told NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. “What I noticed about Dak was, this guy had the same desire, work ethic, the same traits as Brady. Nobody wants to be compared to anyone else. But he was the hardest worker, guys gravitate towards him, he was the first one there … ”

Prescott, a fourth-round draft pick out of Mississippi State, has exceeded expectations in his first season taking over for Tony Romo in Dallas, just as Brady, a sixth-round pick out of Michigan in 2000, surprised everyone in his rookie campaign after replacing an injured Drew Bledsoe in New England.

Brady since has won four Super Bowl titles, including his first during that rookie season, while Prescott still is trying to established himself. But it’s been an impressive run so far for the 23-year-old Cowboys quarterback, who apparently has a Brady-like work ethic on which to build.

“I told his agents Rick (Roberts) and Jeff (Guerriero) ‘I’m not saying he’s going to be the next Tom Brady, but he has all the intangibles to do exactly the same thing,’ ” Shaw told Rapoport. “All Dak wants is to be the best. When he wakes up in the morning, that’s what he wants. The most important thing for him was to learn how to play football.”

Maybe it’s unfair to make the comparison. But either way, tossing Brady’s name around in connection with any quarterback is the ultimate praise.
