Heisman Trophy Finalists: DeShaun Watson, Lamar Jackson Among 5 Chosen

The finalists for the 2016 Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football, were revealed Monday night.

They are Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook.

The trophy will be awarded Saturday night in New York City.

Jackson, who’s the first Heisman finalist in Cardinals history, was the favorite for much of the season before a subpar finish over the last month. That means the race is wide open, although Jackson and Watson probably have the best chance. Watson is the only returning finalist from last season and the only finalist from the four teams in this season’s College Football Playoff.

A Westbrook or Peppers victory would be the first by a non-quarterback or non-running back since 1997, when Michigan cornerback/kick returner Charles Woodson won.
