Jerry Jones put to rest any speculation that the Cowboys might bench Dak Prescott in favor of Tony Romo after Dallas’ loss to the New York Giants on Sunday night.
“No. No. No. No,” the Cowboys owner/general manager said when asked about potentially replacing Prescott with Romo, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Not at all. Let me just say that.”
Sunday’s loss was the Cowboys’ first since Week 1, and Prescott didn’t play well. The rookie QB threw two interceptions and finished with just 165 passing yards, making it three consecutive games in which he’s failed to reach the 200-yard mark.
Still, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said after the game he never considered calling upon Romo in relief of Prescott. And Jones doubled down in emphasizing the organization’s confidence in Prescott.
“First of all he’s got 13 NFL ballgames at a high level under his belt,” Jones said, per the Star-Telegram. “What’s he got four interceptions now? Is it four? OK, so he’s got four interceptions in 13 ballgames. I feel good about our quarterback, and I like what we are at the quarterback position as well.
“We should have asked and wanted him to make the drive that might have won this thing for us (Sunday). We were within striking distance. I don’t want to make excuses. Most of what happened to us offensively (Sunday) was a well coached NYG defense more than a failing of a player or players.”
Prescott and the Cowboys will look to bounce back in Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
