The NBA’s most polarizing rule may be coming to an end.
The stipulation that requires NBA prospects to attend one year of college brings about plenty of speculation and controversy — depending on who you ask.
Since the inception of the rule in 2006, University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari’s “one and done” factory at Kentucky has produced 21 freshmen that made the jump to the pros. And though there have been successes like John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, there have been duds like Daniel Orton and Archie Goodwin as well.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has stated he would prefer players spend two years in college instead of one. The rate of injury among “one and done” players would suggest so, as top picks like Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Jabari Parker saw most of their first years derailed by injury.
With reports now circulating that Silver is looking to abolish the rule and reopen the door for high school prospects to enter the NBA, now would be a good time to look back on the best “one and dones”.
