Desiree Linden Becomes First American Woman To Win Boston Marathon Since 1985

Amid stiff winds and driving rain, Desiree Linden made history at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

The 34-year-old California native won the Marathon, becoming the first American woman to win the Patriots’ Day race since 1985. Linden finished the race in 2 hours, 39 minutes and 54 seconds.

And apparently, Linden’s finishing time could have been even better, but she — get this — slowed and waited for fellow American runner Shalane Flanagan to make a bathroom break.

Flanagan, a native of Marblehead, Mass., had another strong showing herself, finishing in sixth place with a 2:46:31 time.

Yuki Kawauchi won the men’s race with an unofficial time of 2:15:54. The Japanese runner erased a sizable deficit late in the race and was able to get by 2017 winner Geoffrey Kirui on his way to victory.
