Mac Jones Excelled In This Area In Patriots Upset Win Over Bills

The New England quarterback played well against the blitz

Mac Jones stepped up big for the New England Patriots to earn one of his most important wins since entering the NFL in a 29-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The third-year quarterback posted the second-highest passer rating of his career in the victory at 126.7. Jones completed 25 of his 30 passes for 272 with a pair of touchdowns.

Overall, Jones turned in what was by far his best performance of the outing. His footwork and decision-making were worlds better than in previous outings with major struggles.

Specifically, Jones had not had protection throughout the season from a depleted and ineffective offensive line. In that case, it’s no coincidence that Jones excelled on a day when New England consistently won at the line of scrimmage. Even when Buffalo brought pressure, the Patriots kept producing as an offense.

Against the blitz from the Bills, Jones went eight-for-nine through the air for 113 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown with a 155.8 rating, per Pro Football Focus.

“We came after him,” Bills safety Jordan Poyer told reporters after the game of bringing pressure against Jones. “He just made a good throw and catch.”

In a game where the pressure remained on the Patriots externally to produce, the team delivered a quality performance from its quarterback with a point to make.
