Alex Cora Believes Ceddanne Rafaela Should Be In ROTY Conversation

Red Sox rookie Ceddanne Rafaela has been an entertaining player to watch for Boston, but he hasn’t been referenced enough in the MLB Rookie of the Year chit-chatter.

Rafaela’s defense has been big to the Red Sox this week at shortstop, making plays look easy. On Thursday night, Rafaela made a play that stopped Athletics infielder Zack Gelof from running out a grounder to shortstop — flexing his range and arm.

With a quick scoop, Rafaela made a jumping throw right on target to make the night easier for Red Sox starting pitcher Tanner Houck.

The 23-year-old not only looks impressive at shortstop but also in centerfield. He has played 55 games in the outfield, 46 at shortstop and four at third base. Rafaela has proven his versatility when playing all three positions.

“The kid, he’s really good,” Cora told reporters, per NESN’s postgame coverage. “I’m surprised people are not talking about him in the conversation of Rookie of the Year because what he’s done throughout the season is amazing. Playing elite defense in centerfield. Playing great defense at shortstop.”

On top of his defense, Rafaela’s bat has started to become more consistent for the Red Sox.

In April, his batting average dipped below .160, hitting .154 at one point. Starting at the end of May, Rafaela found more consistency in his at-bats. Now, he is hitting .246 with 56 RBIs and 13 home runs.

“Offensively he started slow average-wise, but he’s been consistent in every aspect,” Cora said. “He’s getting better. He puts on good at-bats today and the reason where we are where we’re at is because the versatility of our roster.”

Rafaela and the Red Sox have one more series before the All-Star break, taking on the Kansas City Royals starting on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park will all game coverage on NESN.
