Celtics’ Top Pick Modeled Game After This Unheralded Veteran

Baylor Scheierman watched this vet 'a lot' growing up

Baylor Scheierman might not turn into a perennial All-Star, but that doesn’t mean the Celtics rookie won’t be a valuable NBA player.

Scheierman, who Boston took with the 30th overall pick in this year’s draft, seems to understand that. Asked Monday to identify players who he can see himself mirroring, the Creighton product didn’t choose one of the game’s elite.

“I like watching Joe Ingles a lot — just how he plays,” Scheierman told reporters, per a video from WEEI’s Justin Turpin. “That’s one guy I watched a lot growing up and tried to model my game after.”

Brad Stevens and company surely would be thrilled if Scheierman becomes an Ingles-like player. The Australia native is about to enter his 11th NBA season, and while he’s no longer averaging double-digits, he remains a very useful asset primarily due to his court savvy and 3-point shooting.

If you’re in the market for another comparison, one Celtics executive seems similarities between Scheierman and a wing who was selected not terribly long after franchise cornerstone Jayson Tatum in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Green Teamers will be able to see how apt those comps are beginning Saturday when Scheierman and the C’s kick off their Summer League slate.
